My first ARRL handbook was the 1970 issue. It was full of exciting projects. My favorite was "The Novice Special". It used 2 tubes and was good for 15 watts on 80 and 40 meters. I was 13 years old and I dreamed of building my own. I was going to buy all the parts from Lafayette Radio and it was going to cost me about $45. I had the order forms with all the parts listed, completely filled out but never mailed. I was given an old surplus rig and used it instead.
Fast forward to 2010, I finally got around to building my 40 meter cw rig. Total cost was only $1.09 for the meter shunt. The rest of the parts coming from the "junk box". It runs about 2 watts out and it doesn't chirp. Yeah Baby - Tom |
