My first ARRL VHF contest was in June 1975. I ran "portable 6" from Freddy's shop on Turner Road in Lodi. Rod, WA6ZNC, came by and took a couple of photos for me. On six meters I used a Heath HX-20 transmitter running 10 watts to a Army surplus "Green Box" amplifier and a Parks receiver converter to a Motorola R390 receiver. The antenna was a 4 elemnet KLM. On two meters, I used a Gonset Sidewinder for ssb and a Kaar 2 meter rig for FM with either rig driving another "Green Box" amplifier. The antenna for 2 was Fred's famous "corkscrew" antenna. I was the king of "52" and it was where I made most of my contacts. I also has 446 FM. Thanks Fred for all help!! |
